A little bit about us.
We are both very excited to complete our placements at The Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and look forward to working within a very different environment on challenging projects that we can hone our skills in.
We can not thank everyone who has made this possible enough, thank you!
Issy:
I have always had a keen interest in the arts from a young age, my art interest grew at school when I undertook my GCSEs and A Levels in art based subjects, where I also applied and gained a place at The University of Lincoln, I decided to defer my entry for a year to be able to do an art foundation course where I could continue my interest in creating art before I started conserving it. I have always been interested in physically working with and on 3D objects and while at school for my A Level in Fine Art I created a sculptural piece based on musical notes that is still in place against the music building wall and during my art foundation I developed skills within ceramics creating another sculptural piece.
At university I have worked on a wide range of materials and objects from gilding to paper. While in São Paulo I hope to be able to work with more challenging materials and different cultural objects that will challenge my skills, with respect to the ethics of the objects and allow for my knowledge in conservation to grow.
I have gained so much from my degree and this has allowed for my confidence in my work to gain a place working at The Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo on 3D and sculptural objects. This is my first trip to South America and I am very excited to live in such a dynamic environment, as well as learning and working in a stimulating professional museum.
Grace:
I found out about the Conservation and Restoration (BA) Hons course at the University of Lincoln during my foundation course at Blackpool and the Fylde College where I was specialising in Fine Art. I have always loved painting, drawing and experimenting with different mediums, in addition to studying art history and visiting galleries so the idea of using these skills and interests in a practical career really appealed to me.
During my time at Lincoln I have treated a variety of objects made from different materials but the course does not offer the opportunity to treat easel paintings. While I have thoroughly enjoyed treating other materials and would be open to specialising in their conservation in my future career, I would like the opportunity to conserve easel paintings before I graduate and make a decision about what I will specialise in.
Therefore, I hope to gain experience in the conservation of easel paintings in my placement at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. I would also like to use this opportunity to learn more about working in a professional conservation environment and improve my language skills as although I studied Spanish up to A level, I have only recently started learning Portuguese.
I have never visited South America before and I can’t wait to live in Brazil for six weeks and explore for a further week afterwards. I can’t believe how fortunate I am to be going on this trip. Thanks so much to everybody who has helped to make it possible – you will have my eternal gratitude and probably a postcard or Brazilian-flag fridge magnet!
